Rumsey studios

Rumsey Studios was born out of my bedroom during my time at university.  In the last 5 years I’ve grown my studio knowledge and gear collection to a place where I feel I can create in a way that works.

It’s not the must expensive, luxurious studio. I’ve kept that ‘home recording feel’ where the music will become what it becomes, in its own perfect way.

If you’re interested about coming to Rumsey Studios there’s a form a the bottom of this page, or you can email me - letscreate@willrumsey.com

Project Highlights

My own Music

I’ve had a number of my own musical projects over the years. I always try to keep my song writing alive. As I’m sure many you creatives can relate, our work after time, well we hate it. But I’ve decided to keep this little project out in the world. I helped me recover from my illnesses in 2024 and reminds me of how far you come.

Change because of Change was a project with friends at the beginning of 2025.

Ronnie Cutmore

I met Ronnie whilst at uni, and we’ve been working on music ever since. I produced his first EP back in 2022 and after that I had the pleaser of producing his next. 2 singles from that EP made it to Spotify. His track ‘Ceiling’ will always be special to me as it was the last song produced entirely from my bedroom.

gear Menu

My gear philosophy:

Not everything in the studio is shiny and expensive. Sure I have my prize pieces but the majority has been accumulated to an honest budget. It reflects the creative process that I have here, and I love it!

The studio runs through Ableton, it’s the one I chose when I started producing.

Mic’s, Pre’s ‘n’ Speaks

Preamps and Audio Interface

Audient Evo 16, the first 8 channels of input. Honestly at the time it was the best and cost effective way to get a lot of inputs. But it’s holding up. I’ve gotten used to the digital interface and the preamps are pretty nice. The other 8 channels comes from a Behringer ADA8200, great to put my dynamic mics through for drums.

Microphone Collection

My mic collection is quite a mish-mash. My Universal Audio SD-1 is great for vocals and odd ear candy sounds. I have a matched pair of SE Electronics SE 7’s great for acoustic guitars and drum overheads. An SE Electronics V7X lives on my Fender Twin Amp. My drum mics are a combination of AKG, Behringer and Sennheiser.

Speakers

Adam Audio T7V’s. They’re alright. Nice to listen to. Thumbs up. I really don’t know what else to say.

Headphones

My trusty Sony WH1000XM3’s. Not the obvious producers choice, and I’ve yet to discover another person who actually uses these for production. But there are the back of my hand, Since I bought them back in 2018 I listen to everything on these, I know them so well.

Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 80 omh’s. A good comfatbale pair of cans. Great for long sessions. But unpopular opinion, they’re not my favourite, ask me why.

Guitar World

Gretsch Centre Block

This guitar has grown on me so much, it’s a joy to play. And the sweet sweet tones, clean and warm, then push it and it cuts through with bite and grrrrr.

Fender Telecaster

An old friend, my 2014 Mexican Tele has a properly special place in my heart. It’s been everywhere with me. Up, down, left and yes even right.

Fender Twin Amp

A mighty beast of an amp. warm, lush, big, loud 2x12” speakers with clean and driven channels. Tremelo and the best spring reverb. What more do you need?

Yamaha Acoustic

Not my favourite acoustic to play, but it records so well. The DI output is nice as well when I’ve gigged with it.

Eastwood Acoustic (Nashville Strung)

A cheap old acoustic that sat around until I strung it with a set of Nashville strings. Now it has a new life. It certainly isn’t going to win any awards for sonic qualities but it’s great for cool ideas and layers.

Ibanez SDGR Bass

A versatile bass, active with a passive switch, eq on board, I still haven’t covered all the possibilities. It’s been picked to palm muted and comes out smooth every time.

Ashdown AAA-60 Bass Amp

A nice little combo amp, I usually take the DI signal from the amp but when I need to bass out loud, it does the job!

Pedals

A TC Spark, a Boss Blues Driver, a TC Tailspin and a TC Skysurfer. Not the most extensive pedal list. But enough for unique and varied tones that please the ears.

Yamaha ‘Gigmaker’ Kit

The drum shells and hardware are from white grape (sparkly green) Yamaha Kit I bought from my friend a good number of years ago. I know this kit inside out, the quirks, the rattles, how I tune it.

Dream Cymbals

13” Energy Hi Hats - Very love them or hate them depending on the song. 20” Contact Ride - nice good ‘ting’ to it, rather heavy though, it you crash it with force it can be rewarding. 16” Bliss Crash - A BEAUTIFUL cymbal, gosh where to start. It sounds bigger than a 16”, has such a satisfying attack, and a blissful wash.

Remo Heads

A good standard that’s relatively priced for a great drum sound. But I’ve only replaced the top heads :’/ On top of the snare is a controlled sound coated, rack is an emperor coated, floor is an ambassador coated. Don’t ask why, haha.

Other Bits and Bobs

Over the years I’ve picked up a number of potentially and probably useless drum gear. But out of this pile of rubbish sometimes comes a glisten of gold. I have an unbranded 16” cymbal with 3 rivets I use as a top hi hat, and I don’t know why it just works. I pair this with a cheap Meinl HCS 16 crash from my first drum kit for the bottom hat.

Have a project in mind?

I’m always looking for exciting projects.
